Discussion:
With the ten questions if each student could start doing 2 or more a day, your body will be thanking you in the long run. It may be going to bed before 9, or eating 2 pieces of fruit a day, or playing outside instead of the Nintendo, or most importantly making sure you have breakfast every day. Breakfast gives your body fuel and energy for the day, this results in you being able to burn more fats in your body throughout the day. It will also make you more alert during class.

Children at your age need to understand that your health is very important, can anyone tell me why?
The students responded with it ‘gives you more energy, makes you live longer, makes you feel good, etc.’ It was interesting to note that no student mentioned that it prevents you to a degree from going to the doctor. What factors can have an effect on your health? The students responded with the main factors of food, exercise, sleep,

Who here has P.E. as their favourite class? And why?
The overall consensus with this question was that P.E. is much more enjoyable and you don’t have the stresses that maths and literacy give you.

How much sleep should we be getting every night? Thereby if we had to be up at 7, what time should we be going to bed?
Most students had the belief that the body required 12 hours sleep every night. Once I explained that 8 hours was acceptable, but they do not go to sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. The discussion led to the understanding that children need to be in bed by 9pm.

Who plays sport on a Saturday? What sport? Why do you play?
Just over half the students play sport on Saturday, with most of the students being from grade 3 to 6. Being a small town, it was the traditional sports of football and netball that was being played, the main reasons being for fun and friendships.

So now we understand that food, exercise and sleep/rest are the main areas of health that we can change. Today the Latrobe students aim to make an impact on your health, in doing this we are going to run a number of fun, engaging activities throughout the day.

Summary of how you believe the Healthy Activity Day was conducted: including things that could be implemented next time, if the content was appropriate, suitable teaching strategies were used, etc:
The day was very well organised and the Latrobe teachers made all of the kids feel comfortable right from the start. All activities related to the topic of the day being health and well-being, great choices of food to make too with the fruit smoothies and berry pancakes. When conducting a ‘fun’ day full of activities, one tip is to have fun as teachers and set the mood. Overall the teaching I observed was very professional and technically correct, well done! Something that could be done next time would be to have in class learning about the fundamentals of health.

I thought the Healthy Activity Day in Colbinabbin was a great success. Individually I thought I did well. I made a concerted effort to help out other team members when the sport wasn't on. I helped with cooking the pancakes on the barbeque, as well as getting equipment prepared at the start and putting it away at the end of the day. I interacted with the students, put the healthy activity day tatoo's on them as well. I had fun with the students during the physical part of the day and remained upbeat trying to keep them motivated.
The team did a stellar job, Jacki in particular was fantastic, being team leader, was able to answer any questions and assisted where she could while overseeing the whole project. Everyone pulled together really well and worked to achieve a common goal, so everyone aiming toward the same outcome helped in making sure that the day was a success. I was impressed with the dynamic approach we took to the day and were prepared for anything. This was especially evident when it started raining during the outdoor activities. We were able to consolidate and move onto a new acivity out of the inclement weather. It was a credit to the entire team that this transition could be done so smoothly.
An improvement for the day might be the communication that we are able to do with the school. I think we were all taken aback by what we knew and what the school knew, which in some cases was very different. Although the teachers were somewhat unsure about what we were doing, they were very accomodating in helping us where they could.

As we have all mentioned everything run smoothly and with nine people in charge, promoting their ideas, it resulted in a great day. Personally I was happy with my performance and thought that I contributed well in my specific area of sport, but also helped out with cooking and planting. I believe that the roles of the day were sorted out well, with jacki being a great example of a leader, the girls knowing their stuff with nutrition, the plant group worked well together and us boys loving our sport and introduced some fun games. As the teacher mentioned above it would have been appropriate to fit in some inclass learning about the fundamentals of health and nutrition.

I believe that the healthy activity day went really well. We were organised and understood what needed to be implemented on the day. I think that there were many aspects of the day that could have used minor improvements but overall it was a great effort. As I have already expressed I think better communication with the school is vital and maybe groups should be able to directly contact the school. Well done Pink Team

I was wrapped with how the day turned out! We worked so well together and helped each other out whenever possible. The kids had a lot of fun and learnt some pretty valuable information. It was great to see all the kids outside at recess and lunch playing with their skipping ropes and beach balls. I was happy with my own performance, I think the kids enjoyed their sports sessions which was my main aim. Something I think we could improve on or add to the day is a theoretical aspect, maybe in a classroom and educate them on some basic nutrition facts and general health knowledge. All in all rippa day!

Overall I feel that everyone worked well together in the planning as well as implementation phases of the activity day. The team-teaching for the activities worked well as we are able to teach our activity, support other groups while they were teaching and give students support and encouragement throughout. It was also useful to watch others teaching and learn strategies to encorporate into our own teaching. Activities were well adjusted throughout the day to suit needs of the school and students. A possible improvement would be to ensure the school had knowledge of what to expect when we arrived and being able to include them in the planning to find out exactly what students prior knowledge is and where they want us to improve on this. Overall a informative and exciting day for all involved which was reflected in students comments throughout.
Carla

I felt that I was personally well prepared for the day and went into it with a positive attitude which is always important. The time for each activity was good and the studnets really enjoyed the planting aspect of the day. As a team we all pulled together really well on the day and had fun with the students. We were also able to adapt to the testing weather conditions. The students were making some really postive comments, which was great feedback. They all really loved the 'showbags' and hopefullt they will continue to use the skipping ropes, hackey sacks and beach balls. The only improvement I would suggest is the communication betewwn the school and our group. Not being able to communicate directly with the school made it difficult and the teachers also felt this. Therefore in future this direct communication should be allowed. Overall a fun and active day!

Jacki
The healthy activity day was a huge success. The students at Colbinabbin were more aware of healthy eating and living by the time we had finished. The comments students made about telling their families what they had learnt showed that they not only enjoyed the activities but their knowledge had also increased. I believe that we made the students and teachers of the school alot more interested in healthy living in particular sport and minor games, I think the students will pressure the teachers into more activities in the future. I was impressed by the way each team member pulled together and displayed excellent team working skills and proved to be flexible, an important skill to have for any teacher. I believe that this day extended peoples communication skills and teaching strategies. I feel confident in each member of the team to fulfill future roles as health and physical education advocators. Great work team!

I was surprised at how well this day turned out. Although we were organised and had great activities planned, I did not think that we could pull it off as well as we did. We worked well as a team and the students all really enjoyed the day. Comments like “Can you come back again?” and “Why can’t we do this more often” were great comments to hear. The teachers were all really appreciative and supportive. Although it was challenging at times, I really enjoyed the day and I think we all benefited from implementing and organising this day. Team teaching is an important part of our future careers and I believe we showed great traits to become excellent facilitators for student learning, particularly in promoting healthy lifestyles!

Evaluation Managers report on Healthy Activity Day:
In conclusion of the day I believe the day was planned and prepared with detail, which then resulted in a great day that all students and teachers enjoyed. In terms of the School Based Program policies and aims set prior to the day most areas were covered. Wearing appropriate clothing, including hats and providing sunscreen to the students at regular intervals during the day could have been improved. Although this could have been excused due to the wet miserable weather, some leaders could have worn their hats as it was compulsory for the students to. The wet weather also meant that we did not have to be concerned with shaded activity between 11am and 3pm.

The main goal and objective of the day was to promote and encourage healthy living, this was met in few areas with healthy food options, great outdoor/indoor activities and plant growing techniques that can be done independently. When reflecting on the day, more drink breaks could have been encouraged, with the leaders explaining why this is important and the benefits of being well hydrated. The recipes and show bags with pamphlets and information about healthy eating were exceptional, very well organised and practical for the occasion. This left the children with something could reflect on and refer to after we had left the school.

The physical activity session in the morning with the prep to grade two students was well thought out and demonstrated in a simple manner. The junior students loved this session and all participated in a fun and enjoyable way, although there was a prize for winning, the emphasis was to have a go! Then the afternoon activity of indoor soccer demonstrated the capability of the teachers to think ahead and book the town hall as potential thunderstorms were on their way. This lesson was also fun and exciting with a great atmosphere in the hall.

In summary of the day all children were extremely well behaved and they broke out of their comfort zones and had a go. This led to the teachers being able to achieve their goals and learning outcomes for the day. From all report s I believe the Latrobe students have left their mark at Colbinabbin Primary School and they will pursue Healthy Activity Day in 2010.
